Dwayne Johnson on ‘The Smashing Machine’s’ Box Office Struggles: Insights and Reactions
Dwayne Johnson’s Response to Box Office Performance
The Rock addresses the low opening of his film, *The Smashing Machine*
Dwayne Johnson, popularly known as *The Rock*, has expressed gratitude to fans while reflecting on the initial box office performance of his film, *The Smashing Machine*. Released last Friday, the movie has only garnered $6 million during its opening weekend. In an Instagram post, Johnson shared how this film has left a lasting impact on him.
Johnson’s Heartfelt Message
In his post, Dwayne shared two images from the film, expressing his heartfelt appreciation. He wrote, “From deep in my grateful bones, thank you to everyone who has watched *The Smashing Machine*. In our storytelling world, you can’t control box office results — but what you can control is your performance and your commitment.”
Life-Altering Experience
Johnson went on to say, “It was my honor to transform into this role for my director Benny Safdie. Thank you, brother, for believing in me. Truth is, this film has changed my life. With deep gratitude, respect, and radical empathy, DJ.”
According to Variety, *The Smashing Machine* debuted in third place, earning only $6 million from 3,345 screens. Given its $50 million production budget and additional promotional costs, the opening weekend figures are disappointing. The film ranked behind *Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl,* which earned $33 million, and *One Battle After Another,* starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which brought in $10.3 million in its second weekend.
*The Smashing Machine* portrays Johnson as MMA fighter Mark Kerr and draws inspiration from a 2002 documentary of the same name. The film also delves into Kerr’s relationship with his girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt, and is directed by Benny Safdie.
