Dennis Chew to Transition from Full-Time DJing to NUS Student Next Year

Two months ago, Love 972 DJ Dennis Chew revealed that he received an offer to enroll at the National University of Singapore after completing his diploma in Chinese Media & Communication at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
At that point, the 51-year-old mentioned he was uncertain about attending university this year.
As August approaches, the critical month for university admissions, Chew has now chosen to defer his enrollment.
In a recent interview, he confirmed plans to commence his studies next August.
What prompted the delay? Chew explained that he has several ongoing projects and commitments extending through December.
He had taken on these assignments, initially not anticipating acceptance from NUS, and intended to return to his full-time radio career post-graduation.
Now, as a future Chinese Studies undergraduate, he intends to set aside his entertainment career once classes begin.
Chew stated, “If I go to university, I’ll truly pause my full-time job temporarily and devote myself to school,” in a WhatsApp voice message.
He’s making this choice because he admits he’s not good at multitasking and believes that “university life will be quite different from poly.”
How will he manage financially during this period?
According to the DJ, his finances are unlikely to be significantly impacted, and he plans to take on less time-consuming work, like endorsements, while attending school. “If I can earn some pocket money, that’d be helpful,” he added.
Chew also indicated that he wouldn’t have to alter his lifestyle dramatically since he doesn’t usually indulge in excessive spending.
“My expenses mostly go towards food, gifts for friends, and treating others,” he shared with a chuckle. “I’ll just buy fewer gifts and toys for myself, and if I cut back a little on everything, I can save a lot.”
The one area where Chew refuses to cut back is on holidays.
“While I’m studying, I’ll still travel during the long breaks,” he mentioned.
Reflecting on his polytechnic experience, he noted that there’s generally no homework assigned during term breaks, allowing him to fully enjoy his time off.
“I love this kind of life. It’s different from work, where even during leave, you still have to think about work. In school, you don’t know what’s next, so there’s no way to prepare in advance,” Chew explained.
“So, the only thing I’d splurge on is traveling abroad,” he concluded.
