Deepika Padukone’s Commitment: Shalini Pandey Weighs In on the Debate
Shalini Pandey discusses her return to South cinema and comments on Deepika Padukone’s recent challenges
After making a significant impact in Hindi cinema, Shalini Pandey has returned to South Indian films during this Dussehra with the movie Idly Kadai, co-starring Dhanush. Her journey in the film industry has brought her close to many celebrated names, both in South India and Bollywood. When asked about women asserting themselves in the industry, she acknowledges that such dynamics can indeed stir unease among established figures.
Shalini shares, “It’s a journey we must navigate. We still have a long way to go regarding equal pay. I’m grateful to influential women like Shabana Azmi who have been openly fighting for our rights. They paved the way for my generation. Hence, it’s my responsibility to voice my needs and push for what I deserve, even if I don’t always succeed.”
Recently, Deepika Padukone faced scrutiny after being dropped from two South Indian projects, with her commitment called into question. Shalini expresses her admiration for Deepika, saying, “I have followed her career since school. She’s an amazing actress and always speaks up about mental health issues, setting an example for others. She deserves everything she asks for.”
Reflecting on her own comeback in South cinema, Shalini says, “Being back in a Tamil film has been refreshing—I’ve missed the warmth from the audience there. It’s been quite a while since I spoke the language. After Arjun Reddy, the love from South Indian fans has never faded. Collaborating with Dhanush was exhilarating, as he directed and acted in Idly Kadai, providing a rich learning experience.”
