The New Dress Code at the Cannes Film Festival
The Cannes Film Festival red carpet is renowned for its strict regulations. Recently, a new guideline has been introduced: nudity is now prohibited.
Changes in Dress Policy
While nudity was never openly accepted, the updated dress code, released just before the 78th edition, explicitly states that “nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival.” This change has caught significant attention, particularly as trends like sheer and “nude dresses” have gained popularity.
Cannes press officials clarified that this addition to the dress policy aims to uphold the institutional framework of the festival and comply with French law. “The aim is not to regulate attire per se,” they stated, “but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet.”
Additional Restrictions
In addition to the no-nudity policy, Cannes has introduced restrictions on voluminous outfits. Attire that includes large trains, which could hinder the movement of guests or complicate seating arrangements, is now not allowable.
Historically, the festival has seen celebrities like Bella Hadid, Naomi Campbell, and Kendall Jenner pushing fashion boundaries. For evening premieres at the Cannes film festival’s Grand Théâtre Lumière, formal wear is expected, including black tie attire. In past years, security has even denied entry to women not wearing heels.
Social Media and Festival Etiquette
In 2018, the festival banned selfies, with Cannes director Thierry Frémaux describing them as “grotesque.” However, A-listers frequently defy this ban by capturing quick photos on the steps of the Palais.
The festival is set to begin on Tuesday, ushering in another exciting season filled with cinema and glamour. How do you feel about these latest changes to the Cannes dress code?
