Café Owners Express Regret for Misplacing Blame on Sir Peter Jackson's Closure

Apology from Chocolate Fish Café Owners

The proprietors of a well-known café in Wellington, the Chocolate Fish Café, have issued an apology after mistakenly implicating filmmakers Sir Peter Jackson and Dame Fran Walsh in their imminent closure.

Background of the Misunderstanding

Last week, owners Penny and John Pennington expressed their surprise and disbelief when they were informed that their café would be closing due to the end of their lease, which is owned by the filmmakers as part of a redevelopment initiative in Shelly Bay.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Penningtons clarified that they were incorrect in attributing the closure decision to Jackson and Walsh, acknowledging that it was not their doing.

Acknowledgment of Mistake

The couple stated, "On Tuesday, September 30, we learned from our landlord, Wingnut PM, that our tenancy at Shelly Bay would terminate on January 31, 2026. This sudden news was shocking to us."

They added, "Regrettably, we assumed that Sir Peter Jackson and Dame Fran Walsh were behind the decision. We acknowledge we were mistaken."

Respecting the Landlord’s Decisions

The Penningtons emphasized their respect for Wingnut PM’s operational choices and offered a sincere apology to Jackson and Walsh for any misunderstanding caused by their earlier comments.

"We deeply regret our mistake and sincerely apologize for misleading the public and for any offense to Sir Peter and Dame Fran. This apology is being made willingly."

The Café’s Legacy

The Chocolate Fish Café has been a cherished part of the Shelly Bay community for the past 15 years. Jackson and Walsh purchased the historic Submarine Barracks property in 2023, with plans for significant renovations. A spokesperson for Wingnut PM stated that discussions about the café’s future had been ongoing for a year, highlighting necessary repairs and upgrades.
