Bob Ross Paintings Up for Auction to Support Public Television

Auction Details

Thirty artwork pieces by the iconic Bob Ross will soon be sold at auction, with proceeds aimed at supporting U.S. public television stations facing severe funding cuts. This initiative seeks to aid these stations in overcoming recent budget challenges.

The Legacy of Bob Ross

Bob Ross was a beloved figure on public television during the 1980s and ’90s, known for his soft-spoken, nurturing demeanor. Joan Kowalski, president of Bob Ross Inc., stated, “His art was meant for everyone,” emphasizing that this auction helps preserve his legacy while funding programs crucial for many stations across the country.

Upcoming Auctions

Bonhams will feature the first auction of Ross’s paintings in Los Angeles on November 11. Subsequent auctions will occur in cities like London, New York, and Boston, as well as through online platforms. All profits will benefit public television stations using materials from American Public Television.

Supporting Struggling Stations

With recent federal budget cuts—totaling approximately $1.1 billion—many stations now find themselves in a precarious funding situation. This impacts the availability of well-loved shows like The Best of Joy of Painting, America’s Test Kitchen, and This Old House. Smaller rural stations are particularly hard hit, facing challenges in meeting licensing fees.

Reflecting on Bob Ross’s Impact

Ross passed away in 1995 but left a lasting impression through The Joy of Painting. His calming style and encouraging philosophy peaked once again during the COVID-19 lockdowns, showcasing the timeless appeal of his teachings on art.

Auction Highlights

Among the 30 paintings to be auctioned are serene landscapes filled with mountains and lakes, typical of Ross’s aesthetic. These works were primarily created during his episodes, often within a single broadcast time. Previous auctions have shown high values for his work, with earlier pieces fetching substantial sums, indicating a strong interest in Ross’s art.
