One of Auckland’s most beloved record stores, Marbecks, is set to close its physical locations after over ninety years of operation.
For generations, this store has played a pivotal role in Auckland’s music scene, celebrated for its expert team, thoughtfully curated collections, and the excitement of discovery it offered to music fans.

However, this is not a farewell. Marbecks is transitioning to an online-only platform, marking a new chapter for the retailer. This shift ensures that customers can still access a wide array of music while enjoying the convenience of home delivery.
In addition, Marbecks is planning pop-up events at festivals and music gatherings throughout New Zealand to keep the essence of the store vibrant and accessible.
The Vision for Marbecks
According to Roger Marbeck, a member of the founding family, the decision to go online reflects how people are evolving in their music consumption and discovery.
“Marbecks has been a haven for music lovers for over ninety years in Queens Arcade. Although closing our physical store is bittersweet, our mission endures – to share music that inspires and unites. The online store enables us to extend that legacy to a broader audience than ever,” he stated.

Sandra Hopping, the longtime Store Manager, shared her thoughts as well: “It’s been an honor to welcome multiple generations of music enthusiasts through our doors. Many have come to us for their first album and built lifelong collections.”
