Anurag Kashyap Discusses the Harsh Truths of Filmmaking: His Feelings on Wasseypur
Anurag Kashyap shares critical views on the impact of audience reception on filmmaking.
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, recognized for his bold storytelling, recently made an eye-opening statement regarding his acclaimed film, *Gangs of Wasseypur*, leaving many fans astonished.
Facing the Truth about Wasseypur
During a podcast with Digital Documentary, Anurag stated, “Mujhe Wasseypur se saqt nafrat hai. Jab bhi koi aadmi bolta hai na, ‘Sir Wasseypur,’ man karta hai joota utarkar maru.” In translation, he expressed a strong disapproval for Wasseypur and shared that he wishes he could react violently whenever it’s mentioned.
His disappointment does not stem from the film itself. Instead, he is frustrated by how the audience received it at its release. He believes that had the public supported *Gangs of Wasseypur* at that time, his career path might look quite different.
“Jab Wasseypur release hui, tab to tumne dekhi nahi. Chaar din chali thi theatre mein…(When Wasseypur was released, no one watched it. It ran in theatres for just four days before Ek Tha Tiger took over.)” This statement brings attention to how swiftly audience preferences shift, often overshadowing significant works.
The Cultural Impact of *Gangs of Wasseypur*
First released in two parts in 2012, *Gangs of Wasseypur* has become a landmark in Indian cinema. Set in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, this crime saga immerses viewers in a prolonged battle between coal mafia families. While it didn’t achieve notable box office success initially, it has since garnered a huge cult following, earning praise from critics and film lovers alike.
Anurag’s Newest Endeavors
Anurag’s recent project, *Nishaanchi*, showcases his signature raw storytelling style, paired with a more commercial flair. This film features newcomer Aaishvary Thackeray and garnered ₹1.3 crore in its debut at the box office.
