Anik Dutta Highlights Originality in Film Inspired by Satyajit Ray

In Kolkata, acclaimed director Anik Dutta discussed his latest film, ‘Joto Kando Kolkatatei’, describing it as a tribute to the legendary Satyajit Ray while asserting its originality.

The film is currently attracting considerable audiences in both multiplexes and single-screen theaters. While borrowing its title from Ray’s work ‘Joto Kando Kathmandute’, it presents a novel storyline wherein a young woman enlists a detective to discover her biological family.

Dutta described his writing as infused with the essence of a Feluda story without being a direct adaptation. “While it nods to Ray’s influence, it’s distinctly my creation,” he clarified in an interview with PTI.

Kolkata plays a significant role in the narrative. “The city serves not just as a setting, but certain locations become integral characters that enhance the film’s depth,” he explained.

With a cast featuring Abir Chatterjee, Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed, and others, the film has enjoyed sold-out shows in several locations. Interestingly, Chatterjee portrays a character named Topshe, reminiscent of Ray’s detective series.

Dutta shared his reasons for casting Chatterjee, citing his charisma and close friendship with the actor. Dutta also noted that this film takes a departure from political satire found in his previous works.

This time around, the plot centers on a woman’s search for her identity. “There’s no political commentary here; it’s purely a narrative about self-discovery,” he emphasized.

Debuting his film during Durga Puja, Dutta dismissed concerns regarding box office competition. “Numbers don’t matter; my film’s release coincides with the festival for the first time,” he remarked, adding that he has heard people traditionally enjoy films during this time.
