Allbirds Unveils First-Ever Sneaker Made from Recycled Polycotton

Allbirds Launches Sustainable Footwear Collection

US footwear brand Allbirds has introduced an innovative collection designed to creatively transform waste into high-quality shoes. This groundbreaking line is the first to utilize textile-to-textile recycled materials made from polycotton waste.

Partnership for Progress

The development of these sneakers was made possible through a collaboration with Blumaka, a frontrunner in recycling foam for premium footwear, and Circ, a pioneer in textile recycling. Together, they aim to breathe new life into manufacturing waste by converting blended textile scraps and foam leftovers into stylish, functional footwear.

Innovative Design Philosophy

According to Adrian Nyman, Allbirds’ chief design officer, the phrase “better things in a better way” reflects their commitment to exploring diverse technologies and crafting methodologies. He emphasized that the Remix collection embodies their ambition for sustainable design that improves both aesthetics and user experience.

The new Remix styles, including the Runner NZ Remix and the Cruiser Remix, feature midsoles made from reclaimed foam scraps sourced from athletic footwear production. This innovative process uses 99% less water and results in 65% lower carbon emissions compared to conventional foam methods.

A Vision for Resource Management

Stuart Jenkins, CEO of Blumaka, expressed that Allbirds showcases an essential approach to resource management. He stated, “The world doesn’t need more foam; it needs smarter use of existing resources.” This philosophy emphasizes their commitment to producing high-quality shoes while addressing sustainability challenges.

“Waste foam is not just an issue; it is an opportunity,” Jenkins remarked, underscoring the importance of creating products that are both durable and eco-friendly.

Breaking New Ground in Footwear

Additionally, the Remix collection is notable for being the first to incorporate textile-to-textile recycled materials made from polycotton waste. This achievement is a result of Circ’s innovative hydrothermal recycling technique, which effectively separates and recovers cotton and polyester fibers from mixed fabrics.

Peter Majeranowski, CEO of Circ, highlighted that this collaboration with Allbirds sets a precedent for scalable textile-to-textile recycling in the footwear industry. By integrating Circ’s recycled materials into the Remix, he affirmed that circular materials can enhance product quality without compromising aesthetic appeal.

Availability of the Allbirds Remix Collection

The Allbirds Remix styles are now available for purchase both online and in select stores in the US and UK. They come in a range of full and half sizes, from Women’s 5-11 and Men’s 7-14, retailing for $140.
