Release of Santosh in India After Censorship Struggles

The Hindi film Santosh, which represented Britain in the Oscars last year, will finally be available in India after a long struggle with censorship. Initially premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, the movie could not secure a theatrical release and is now set for a digital launch on Lionsgate Play.

Santosh Set for Digital Release

Directed by Sandhya Suri and featuring Shahana Goswami and Sunita Rajwar, Santosh is scheduled to premiere on Lionsgate Play on October 17. Goswami has described the film as extremely meaningful to her.

“This beautifully crafted story reflects the world around us. Sandhya Suri has delivered something profound and touching. The film has been appreciated globally since its debut at Cannes, and the performances are remarkable, especially Sunita Rajwar’s portrayal of a complex character. I am excited for the audience in India to finally see it,” Goswami expressed.

The narrative follows a young widow who assumes her late husband’s police role. This leads to a serious investigation into the rape and murder of a Dalit teenager, making it a significant commentary on caste violence in India.

Delayed Due to Censorship Issues

The film faced numerous delays, originally set to release last year, due to issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The board insisted on extensive cuts for certification. Rajwar stated, “We want viewers to see our work, but the restrictions have been overwhelming.”

Santosh, produced by Good Chaos, Cinefrance Studios, and MetFilm Production, was Britain’s official Oscar entry for 2025. Although it reached the December longlist, it ultimately did not receive a nomination.
