Adil Hussain has revisited his feelings about appearing in the 2019 film Kabir Singh, which starred Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani. While the film was a box office success, it drew intense criticism for its portrayal of toxic masculinity and misogyny.

In a recent interview, Adil shared his regrets about the project. He had been traveling extensively for another film and didn’t find time to review the complete script or the original Telugu version. To avoid taking the role, he even instructed his manager to quote a fee five times his usual rate, thinking the producers would back off. Contrary to his expectations, they agreed.

Hussain eventually agreed to participate after being impressed with one particular scene. However, upon viewing the final cut, he felt a deep sense of regret. “It was misogynistic. When I saw the film, I thought, ‘What have I done?’” he expressed. “It’s not just about what Sandeep Reddy Vanga did — I take responsibility for my choice. Several female friends expressed their disappointment, and it’s important for me to say that I regret being a part of that film,” he explained.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Response

This isn’t the first time Adil has voiced his regret. Following his earlier comments in 2019, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga responded sharply on social media. He stated, “Your ‘belief’ in 30 art films didn’t bring you as much fame as your ‘regret’ about one blockbuster did. I regret casting you, knowing your greed is greater than your passion. Now, I’ll save you from embarrassment by replacing your face with AI. Now, smile properly.”

With over 40 years in the industry and notable films like Mukti Bhawan and Life of Pi under his belt, Hussain views his association with Kabir Singh as a rare misstep he wishes he could reverse.
