Actor Wunmi Mosaku made headlines at the Golden Globes by revealing her second pregnancy. Through this announcement, she emphasized the need for increased recognition of the complexities and vulnerabilities tied to pregnancy.

Embracing the Journey

The star of Sinners expressed her desire for the journey of pregnancy to be celebrated, focusing especially on the experiences of Black women.

At 39, the British-Nigerian actress showcased her baby bump in a stunning, custom-made bright yellow gown by Matthew Reisman just before the award ceremony.

In a conversation with Vogue, Mosaku shared her choice to openly embrace her pregnancy instead of hiding it. “Baby has seen me through ever so carefully,” she said, adding that she wanted to celebrate the journey they’ve undertaken together despite its challenges.

Cultural Inspiration

She explained how a Yoruba proverb, "Iya ni Wura," meaning “mother is golden,” inspired her choice of the vibrant dress for the significant occasion.

Mosaku spoke candidly about the unique struggles faced during pregnancy, particularly by Black women. She advocated for a more compassionate approach to discussions surrounding women’s bodies in these vulnerable moments.

“Matrescence is a journey — often a very difficult one,” she stated, highlighting that the public often overlooks the challenges women face on this path.

Addressing Maternal Health

Continuing her powerful message, she pointed out the lack of gentle communication around pregnancy. “We know it isn’t simple in theory, but we don’t practice the gentleness required when speaking about those who are pregnant or trying to conceive.”

Mosaku also articulated the distinct fears that Black women experience during pregnancy. "Being pregnant as a Black woman involves not just the concern for your baby’s well-being, but also for your own health. This duality of joy and fear is rooted in real experiences, medical biases, and troubling statistics surrounding Black maternal mortality.”

Honoring the Experience

She concluded her remarks by stressing the profound nature of childbirth. "Pregnancy and labor are among the most extreme and dangerous experiences one can endure. We should genuinely honor the vulnerability, anxiety, anticipation, and transformation involved. Let’s also remember those mothers who faced trauma, those who were overlooked, and the lives that were tragically lost."
