Emraan Hashmi defends his upcoming film Haq, emphasizing its respectful portrayal of the Muslim community.
Emraan Hashmi is set to appear in a unique role in his upcoming legal drama, *Haq*. This film draws inspiration from the monumental Shah Bano Case, a pivotal moment in securing divorce rights for Muslim women. Alongside Hashmi, Yami Gautam features, portraying a character reflective of Shah Bano.
Upon releasing the film’s trailer, reactions were mixed, with some expressing concern that it might portray Muslims in a negative light. Emraan Hashmi responded firmly, stating that the film does not target any particular community.
Emraan Hashmi’s Perspective on Sensitivity
In an interview with ANI, Emraan expressed, “I analyzed the script from a creative actor’s perspective. For the first time, I recognized the sensitivity surrounding my community. I believe there’s a balanced viewpoint presented, and we’re not placing blame on any group.”
He further affirmed that the film does not malign any community. “As a liberal Muslim, I felt aligned with the viewpoint of the film. My personal experiences, such as marrying a Hindu, contribute to my secular upbringing. Everyone approaches a film through their unique conditioning and perspectives,” he shared.
Understanding the Shah Bano Case
The Shah Bano maintenance case, officially known as *Mohd. Ahmad Khan v. Shah Bano Begum*, marked a significant legal moment for Muslim women’s rights in India. In 1978, Shah Bano sought maintenance from her ex-husband, an affluent lawyer. The Supreme Court ruled in her favor in 1985, but subsequent legislation by the Rajiv Gandhi government overturned this decision.
