Emma Stone expresses relief over no injuries while filming ‘Bugonia’
In Los Angeles, Emma Stone proudly shared that she did not sustain any injuries while shooting the absurdist comedy sci-fi film, “Bugonia.” This revelation comes as a relief, given her history of injuries during filming.
Reflecting on her experiences, she recounted feeling anxious when co-star Jesse Plemons, portraying a conspiracy theorist named Teddy Gatz, had to tackle her. “He was completely safe and did an incredible job. I broke no bones,” she pointed out, showcasing a sense of camaraderie during the shoot.
Plot Overview of ‘Bugonia’
In “Bugonia,” Stone takes on the role of Michelle Fuller, a pharmaceutical CEO who finds herself kidnapped by two cousins steeped in conspiracy theories. They believe she is actually an alien.
The film draws inspiration from the 2003 South Korean production “Save the Green Planet!” by Jang Joon-hwan and is set for limited theatrical release on Friday, with a nationwide rollout in the U.S. on October 31.
Casting Choices and Representation
Plemons plays Gatz, while Aidan Delbis, a rising star, takes on the role of Gatz’s cousin, Don. Notably, both Delbis and his character are portrayed as being on the autism spectrum, enriching the film’s representation within mainstream Hollywood.
Director Yorgos Lanthimos expressed that the character of Don showcases a unique sensitivity and a fresh perspective on the world, which made Delbis a fitting choice for the role. “I thought that a neurodivergent person would be perfect for this kind of role,” Lanthimos commented.
Character Dynamics
Regarding the film’s complexity, Stone noted the intricate relationships between characters, particularly between her character and Gatz. “It’s so fun to not know whose side you’re on back and forth throughout the entire story,” she said. “They’re both kind of right, and they’re both pretty wrong.”
