Pike River Film Makes Its Debut in Greymouth: A Significant Moment

Pike River Movie Premiere: A Meaningful Reflection

Almost 15 years after the Pike River mine tragedy, Pike River, a film recounting the events, has premiered in Greymouth. Director Robert Sarkies noted in a conversation with 1News that he wanted the film to provide "an intense experience" while being respectful to the community’s sentiments.

The Heart of the Story

The film highlights the bond between Anna Osbourne, a widow, and Sonya Rockhouse, a grieving mother. Osbourne expressed that the movie captures "our journey – from discovering our men were lost to where we stand today." On the initial screening day, around 40 family members of those affected attended, marking a significant moment for many.

A Community’s Emotions

Sarkies admitted to feeling nervous before the screening but felt reassured as audience members expressed feeling validated by the film. Former Mayor Tony Kokshoorn, who stood by his community during the disaster, emphasized the emotional impact this premiere holds for the families involved, highlighting a strong community spirit.

Celebrating the Premiere

Actor Melanie Lynskey shared her joy about the premiere location, stating it felt "important" for the event to occur in Greymouth. She revealed she had received a link to watch the film prior but felt it was more appropriate to experience it live during the premiere.

"This is a story about these people and this place," Lynskey stated, underscoring its significance.

Ongoing Hopes for Justice

Osbourne also noted that nearly 15 years later, "we’re still hoping for a court case." Auckland lawyer Christopher Harder is pursuing legal access to documents from the abandoned prosecution of former Pike River CEO Peter Whittall. Rockhouse mentioned they expect some resolution by the year’s end.
