In its first week, “Kantara Chapter 1” has amassed an impressive collection of over $50 million globally. This success is attributed to a robust performance in its home country, significantly boosting its overall earnings and establishing it as the highest-grossing film this week.

Directed by Rishab Shetty, “Kantara Chapter 1” earned ₹379 crore (approximately $42 million) in India alone during the first seven days. Analysts predict that its earnings could reach around $45 million by the close of its extended first week. With an additional $8 million generated from international markets, the total collection for the first week may exceed $53 million.

Competition in Perspective

This newly minted blockbuster outshines Taylor Swift’s limited release titled “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl,” which made $50 million over its opening weekend but did not gain after that. Furthermore, it also surpassed “One Battle After Another,” which brought in around $40 million globally during its second week. Even “Avatar: The Way of Water” couldn’t keep up, with its re-release earning less than $10 million within the same timeframe.

Wide-ranging Success Across Languages

“Kantara Chapter 1,” originally produced in Kannada, has gained tremendous popularity across different languages. Its Hindi version surpassed ₹100 crore net in the domestic market on Wednesday, while the Kannada version achieved a similar feat. The Telugu version has also performed well, accumulating over ₹60 crore in net collections, along with both the Malayalam and Tamil adaptations earning above ₹20 crore each.
