The sixth track on Swift’s album, “Ruin the Friendship,” includes a nod to 50 Cent.
This poignant song reflects on a boy Swift never kissed in high school due to her fear of ruining their friendship, but tragically, he passed away far too soon.
Throughout the song, she recalls attending prom with someone else, while a 50 Cent song played, and she noticed her friend gazing at her.
“Have fun, it’s prom/Wilted corsage dangles from my wrist/Over his shoulder, I catch a glimpse/And see you looking at me/And it was not an invitation/but as the 50 Cent song played/Should’ve kissed you anyway,” she sings.
Swift reflects on how she lost touch with that friend after school, until her friend Abigail—who appears in several of Swift’s tracks—calls with the heartbreaking news of the friend’s passing.
In her words, “My advice is always ruin the friendship/Better that than regret it/For all time/Should’ve kissed you anyway.”
Many fans initially speculated the song might delve into adult friendships like those with actress Blake Lively, rather than the loss of a childhood companion.
