Rani Mukerji’s mother expresses pride in her daughter, while also hoping for earlier recognition.
After over three decades in the film industry, Rani Mukerji has been awarded her first National Award for Best Actress, a moment celebrated by many. However, her mother, Krishna Mukherjee, feels the recognition has come too late. She believes Rani should have won for her unforgettable role in the film Black.
This year, Rani received the award for her performance in Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway, celebrated at the 71st National Film Awards.
Insights from Rani Mukerji’s Mother
Krishna Mukherjee spoke candidly about Rani’s win while at a Durga Puja event in Mumbai. She stated, “I am happy that she got a National Award. But it is very late. She should have received it for Black. Despite this, I am proud of her today.”
Joining her in conversation, Chitrani Lahiri, wife of late musician Bappi Lahiri, expressed her own surprise regarding the delay in recognition for Rani’s talents. Krishna lamented, “Rani has acted wonderfully in Black. It’s baffling that she wasn’t honored earlier, especially after 30 years in the industry. But today, she is finally being recognized.”
She also mentioned her joy for actor Shah Rukh Khan, who also received his first National Award for his role in Jawan.
About Black
The film Black, co-written and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, tells the inspiring story of Michelle, a woman who is deaf, mute, and blind. She is mentored by Debraj, portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan, who later suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. The film received several accolades, including the National Award for Best Actor and Best Feature Film in Hindi.
Celebrating Rani’s Achievement
Rani’s recent accolade for Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway highlights her outstanding portrayal of Sagarika Chakraborty, an Indian mother whose children were taken by Norwegian authorities in 2011. Fans are now eagerly awaiting her next appearance in Mardaani 3, set for release on February 27, 2026.
