Daniel Johns Hosts ‘In Conversation’ Events to Celebrate His New Film

Daniel Johns is gearing up for his much-anticipated return to the stage, marking his first live appearances in over five years. The Silverchair frontman has announced a series of four intimate conversation shows across Australia this November, with performances slated for Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Newcastle, as confirmed by Frontier Touring.

These unique events will blend “storytelling, film, and music” to celebrate the worldwide premiere of What If the Future Never Happened?, his eagerly awaited short film. Each evening will feature an hour-long onstage discussion alongside a screening of this genre-defying film.

Exploring New Dimensions of Creativity

During the shows, Johns will take audiences on a journey through his creative process and formative years. Attendees can expect to see exclusive photographs, never-before-seen archival footage, and unreleased recordings from his personal collection.

This intimate format offers a rare glimpse into Johns’ career, showcasing four-track bedroom demos from Neon Ballroom, the original writing session for “Straight Lines” from Silverchair’s final album Young Modern, and ideas for an elusive sixth Silverchair album. Additionally, audiences will experience new music from his solo projects, creating a unique experience for each night.

What If The Future Never Happened? is equal parts reality and fantasy, and I’m really proud of what I’ve created,” Johns expressed. “I’ll be sharing stories, playing tunes that haven’t been heard, and discussing concepts that never reached fruition. Essentially, I want to turn theaters into giant living rooms. I’d love for people to join, but either way, you’re all invited!”

The Short Film: A Glimpse into the Past

Directed by James Medlam, this sci-fi inspired featurette transports viewers back to the 1990s, chronicling an ordinary day in the life of a teenage rockstar named Daniel before his rise to fame. The young Johns is portrayed by actor Rasmus King, with the plot revolving around a mysterious encounter with a figure from the future. Filming took place in Newcastle on Awabakal Land in 2022, with the release keenly timed for the 30th anniversary of frogstomp.

Accompanied by a stunning orchestral soundtrack that combines modern interpretations of Silverchair classics, the film features sound design by Adam Alexander from Bamm Bamm Wolfgang. Fans got their first look at the project through a trailer launched in 2022, which coincided with Johns’ album FutureNever, a record-breaking success on the ARIA charts.
