Originally featured on Yothu Yindi’s album Freedom, “World Turning” delves into themes of love and stability. It captures profound sentiments with lines like, “You keep my feet on the ground / As you make my world turn around.” Although it isn’t the band’s most recognized hit, Mauboy expressed its significant impact on her childhood and her desire to infuse the piece with the essence of a choir.
Personal Connection
“This song takes me back to my childhood in the Northern Territory,” Mauboy shared. “I can vividly recall the scents and sights, running barefoot and climbing mango trees, with this song playing in the background.” At a young age, the song’s meaning eluded her, but she appreciates its deeper significance now.
Barkaa’s Perspective
Barkaa described it as an honor to cover a Yothu Yindi track, especially during NAIDOC week. “Black music wouldn’t exist as it is today without Yothu Yindi. Australian music owes a great deal to them,” she stated. “It felt special knowing we’d be honoring a Yothu Yindi song.”
Celebrating Future Generations
This year’s NAIDOC theme, “Our Next Generation,” inspired Barkaa to acknowledge both the youth and future leaders emerging from their communities. “We have faced many challenges, but we have maintained our spirit and resilience,” she added.
