Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra: Original Picks for ‘2 States’
Chetan Bhagat shares insights on the original casting for 2 States
The film 2 States, released in 2014, starred Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor, but were they the first choices? According to Chetan Bhagat, who penned the 2009 novel the film is based on, the initial pick for the lead roles were actually Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra. This surprising revelation shifts the focus on the casting decisions that define Bollywood films.
Alia’s portrayal of Ananya Swaminathan, a Tamilian, and Arjun’s role as Krish Malhotra, a Punjabi, captured audiences’ hearts. They showcased exceptional chemistry and nuanced performances, turning the unexpected casting into a blockbuster.
Reflecting on the casting choices, Bhagat expressed satisfaction with how Alia and Arjun stepped into the roles. He remarked, “The casting made the movie refreshing because they were young. Older actors might have excelled, but the youthful energy was truly surprising.”
Looking ahead, Alia Bhatt will star in Alpha, part of YRF’s Spy universe, and also features in Love & War with Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. Meanwhile, Arjun Kapoor’s latest appearance was in Mere Husband Ki Biwi.
What are your thoughts on the casting choices in Bollywood? Would you have preferred Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra in 2 States?
