CV Rao of Annapurna Studios: Remastering ‘Baahubali The Epic’ in 2 Months
Unveiling Baahubali: The Epic Remaster
SS Rajamouli’s iconic films, *Baahubali: The Beginning* (2015) and *Baahubali 2: The Conclusion* (2017), are reemerging as *Baahubali: The Epic*, set to hit theaters on October 31. This cinematic journey not only propelled Prabhas into stardom but also transformed Indian cinema profoundly. Annapurna Studios’ CTO, CV Rao, discusses the meticulous process behind this ambitious remastering project.
Challenges of Remastering in Just Ten Weeks
Rao elaborates that merging two lengthy films into one was particularly challenging, especially when the post-production techniques have evolved significantly over the decade. “The producer, Shobu Yarlagadda, wanted a polished new look. However, creating that from two films spanning over five hours was a tall order,” he explains. He emphasizes that new films are typically easier to work on compared to older ones, which present their own unique challenges during remastering.
The remastering process extended over nine weeks just to recreate a clean master for the film, contrasting with the four-week timeline required for a fresh project. Rao notes, “Baahubali will feel entirely revitalized; the sound has undergone extensive enhancements, and the visuals have received a comprehensive overhaul.” He mentions that the film will be released in various formats, making it accessible to a wider audience, including IMAX and Dolby Cinemas.
A New Cinematic Experience Awaits
Despite the original films’ popularity, *Baahubali: The Epic* promises a distinctive experience for audiences. Rao highlights the significant improvements in visual effects, sound, and overall dynamics. “With Dolby Atmos sound, viewers will have diverse formats to choose from. I truly believe this remastering is a celebration of cinema,” he adds.
This isn’t Rao’s first foray into elevating Rajamouli’s works; he played a pivotal role in introducing Dolby Cinema technology in India. His experience watching a film at a Dolby Cinema in Las Vegas inspired him to recommend this format for *RRR*, which subsequently became the first Indian film released in Dolby Cinema.
Post-*RRR*, Annapurna Studios has facilitated the release of other films in this format, including *Pushpa 2* and *Baahubali: The Epic*. Looking ahead, Rao hints at numerous exciting projects in the pipeline, including films starring Mahesh Babu, Prabhas, Ram Charan, and Jr NTR, as well as ambitions to bring international projects to Indian audiences.
Closing thoughts: Are you excited to experience *Baahubali: The Epic* in its new format?
