A Deep Dive into Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture
Iris Van Herpen’s Oceanic Inspiration
During the opening day of Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture, designer Iris Van Herpen took attendees on a mesmerizing journey beneath the waves. Her groundbreaking show featured laser lights that beautifully accentuated her designs as they flowed down the runway.
Known for her unique blend of advanced technology and fashion, the Dutch designer showcased stunning, form-fitting dresses. These garments drew inspiration from the natural world, mimicking everything from fish scales to the graceful fins of tropical species.
A Palette from the Abyss
The color scheme displayed in Van Herpen’s collection featured shades of green, deep blues, and striking black and silver, evoking the mysterious depths of the ocean. Central to this ethereal presentation was the theme of jellyfish, aptly named "Sympoiesis." Van Herpen described her approach, using "a vaporous Japanese fabric that drifts like suspended currents within moon-like curves, meticulously crafted with translucent carbon fiber lasers."
Furthermore, coral was artistically represented through an innovative material known as Brewed. This fermented fiber has been carefully laser-cut and melded with translucent organza using heat, creating a truly unique visual experience.
Schiaparelli Goes Bold
In contrast, Schiaparelli unveiled a collection inspired by a "Return to the Future." This line featured an array of striking designs, including a dramatic black and white ruffled dress, sculptural evening gowns, and elegantly understated suits. An exceptionally ornate bullfighter’s outfit and a sleeveless coat adorned with a high, feathered collar and large silver flower completed the collection. The color palette was predominantly white, black, and silver, punctuated with vibrant red accents.
Star-Studded Front Row
Held at the Petit Palais, the show attracted numerous celebrities, including American rapper Cardi B. She turned heads in a form-fitting black gown with a dramatic neckline, embellished with long pearl fringes and even presented with a live crow perched on her gloved hand. British singer Dua Lipa and French actresses Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu and Joséphine Japy also graced the event.
Changes in the Fashion Landscape
As Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture unfolds, running until Thursday, the event has been marked by notable personnel transitions. Demna, known for his daring designs at Balenciaga, has now moved to Gucci. Meanwhile, Dior eagerly anticipates the arrival of its new artistic director, Jonathan Anderson, who made waves at Men’s Fashion Week. Jean-Paul Gaultier, who was present for Van Herpen’s show, will not be showcasing this time.
