Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, known for his screenplay work on Kundan Shah’s classic *Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro* (1983), shares some heartfelt memories about collaborating with the late actor Satish Shah. In an interview, he reflects on their time together, highlighting Shah’s impactful role as Commissioner D’Mello.
Sudhir reminisces, “Kundan introduced many new talents like Nasser (Naseeruddin Shah), Om (Puri), and Satish, who was also an FTII alumnus. Kundan and Satish had previously collaborated on their diploma film, *Bonga*. Among the cast in *Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro*, Satish and Ravi Baswani embraced the film’s satirical essence fully. They resonated with Kundan’s unconventional approach. During the unforgettable coffin scene, it was Satish who transformed his expressions, setting a precedent for how the scene developed. This became a recurring theme in many moments, embodying comedy in its purest form.”
Mishra continues, “We often shot for 72 hours straight, but the energy on set was infectious. Satish’s comedic timing and understanding of the material brought life to the scenes.”
Expressing fondness for their collaborations, he adds, “I often recall lines like ‘Thoda khao thoda phenko’. Working with him in *Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho* was equally memorable, showcasing his incredible talent each time.”
