Jung So-min Discusses Aamir Khan and the Enchantment of Destiny
Jung So Min on Aamir Khan’s Dangal, Would You Marry Me, and the Charm of Destiny
In an exclusive interview, South Korean star Jung So Min discusses her latest show, Would You Marry Me, and her interest in Indian films.
Jung So Min, often hailed as the queen of romantic comedies, returns with her new drama, Would You Marry Me. This series revisits the popular K-drama theme of fake marriage, a concept that Jung previously explored in the show, Because This Is My First Life (2017).
In discussing the allure of this storyline, Jung notes, “Everyone yearns for destiny. The surprise of someone unexpected turning out to be the one is incredibly captivating. It’s that twist of fate that draws people in.” She shared her thoughts during an exclusive chat with HT City from Seoul.
Comparing Two Dramas
When comparing her current project to her past work, she describes Would You Marry Me as more vibrant and dynamic. In this SBS drama, Jung portrays Yoo Me Ri, a designer whose world shifts when she learns her fiancé has cheated on her and that she has fallen victim to a scam. Her fortune changes unexpectedly when she wins a luxurious townhouse; however, to claim it, she must enter a contract marriage with Choi Woo Shik’s character, who bears the same name as her ex-fiancé.
The Dynamic Duo
The playful tension between Yoo Me Ri and her co-star is described by Jung as a lively chase, likening it to the antics of Tom and Jerry. Initially, her character was crafted to be wild and reckless but evolved through collaborative discussions during script readings.
“Yoo Me Ri is resilient. Even during crises, she finds her way back. She embodies strength and integrity, guiding me as I shaped her character,” Jung explained.
Addressing Challenges
Reflecting on her resilience, she said, “Everyone faces hardships differently. I relate to Yoo Me Ri in her unwillingness to give up. While our paths might diverge, I admire her strength to recover.”
Gaining Viewer Affection
The engaging narrative and chemistry between the leads have charmed audiences. Jung recalls her first encounter with Woo Shik as initially awkward, but he made efforts to create a relaxed atmosphere that helped them grow comfortable together. “Acting alongside him was a joy. His performance not only shone but also enhanced mine,” she shared.
Hopes for the Show
Jung So Min expressed her desire that the show provides viewers with moments of joy and solace. “If our drama can offer just a brief escape from the daily grind, then it fulfills its purpose,” she emphasized.
Career Highlights
Since her breakout role in the 2010 teen romance Playful Kiss, Jung has starred in various successful projects, including My Father Is Strange and Alchemy of Souls. She considers fame through a lens of objectivity, recognizing how her past experiences shape her choices.
“Success is subjective, and I appreciate your perspective on it. My choices are driven more by personal experiences than societal pressure,” she acknowledged.
Looking Ahead
Jung expressed a desire to explore characters standing firm in their beliefs and tackling challenges with determination. “I’m drawn to roles that reflect strength and self-reliance,” she said.
Interest in Indian Cinema
Jung So Min revealed that Aamir Khan’s iconic film Dangal left a significant mark on her. She is eager to collaborate within the Indian film industry, noting, “The genre is secondary; I’m attracted to the story and the characters.”
Striking a Balance
As a globally recognized personality, Jung strives to maintain balance between her personal and professional life. “My family helps ground me. Moments with them, especially with my niece and nephew, are invaluable,” she expressed.
Finding Joy in Simplicity
In her downtime, Jung seeks simplicity, enjoying books, films, and quality time with loved ones. “There’s nothing extravagant about my life, but those simple moments are invaluable,” she concluded.
