Smriti Irani: Anupamaa Isn’t a Threat to Kyunki Reboot After 8 Years
Smriti Irani on Competition in Television
Recently, Smriti Irani expressed her views regarding the comparison drawn between the reboot of her iconic show, “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi,” and the popular series “Anupamaa,” starring Rupali Ganguly. She emphasized that such comparisons are “unfair,” given her show’s longstanding legacy.
Historic Success of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
Reflecting on the success of her show, Smriti recalled that “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” achieved record-breaking TRPs of 30 during its initial run in 2000. “If you have the ability to be remembered for 25 years, then we can talk about competition,” she remarked, highlighting the significant milestones the show reached.
She described the discussion of competition with “Anupamaa” as “foolhardy” and questioned if the newer series meets the established standards before such comparisons could be made. Smriti stated, “You’ll never be consistently number one for eight years, which we were.”
Anupamaa and Its Popularity
“Anupamaa” continues to hold a strong position in the TRP charts, thanks to Rupali Ganguly’s compelling portrayal of a homemaker’s transformation from self-sacrifice to self-realization. The series has struck a chord with audiences for over five years. Meanwhile, the reboot of “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi,” which launched after 17 years, aims to combine traditional themes of family and love with modern social dynamics.
For the upcoming limited series, beloved themes are brought back alongside contemporary values, with notable actors like Amar Upadhyay and Shagun Sharma also in the cast.
What do you think about the ongoing comparisons between these two shows? Do you find them justified or simply unfair?
