This trend of celebrities seeking legal protection for their image underscores the importance of personality rights, especially as we enter the age of artificial intelligence.

Understanding Personality Rights

According to an explainer by Lakshmikumaran Sridharan Attorneys, ‘celebrity’ is often viewed as an honor rewarded for success. Different figures gain this status in various ways, from artists to politicians.

When it comes to protecting these rights, there are two main areas. The first involves safeguarding one’s image from unauthorized commercial use, known as publicity rights, which fall under intellectual property law. The second is the right to privacy, which emphasizes the need for personal space.

Hrithik Joins the Ranks

Notable figures like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Karan Johar have previously filed for similar protections. Now, Hrithik Roshan has joined this exclusive list.

Recently, the Delhi High Court granted him relief, directing the removal of certain posts that infringed upon his personality rights. However, the judge declined to order the removal of fan pages dedicated to the actor.

The Court’s Decision

Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora explained that fan clubs cannot be arbitrarily taken down at this stage. He suggested that Hrithik might need to pursue individual actions against each fan page if necessary.

The case will be revisited on March 27, 2026.
