Xie Shaoguang Makes Emotional TV Comeback as a Cancer Patient After 20 Years

Xie Shaoguang’s latest acting role marks his return to the screen after two decades, and it’s a project that resonates deeply with him. In an interview, he expressed his desire to explore themes of “human nature and human psychology,” eager to reconnect with fans who have supported him during his long absence.

This month, viewers can look forward to his drama, *The Gift of Time*, which premieres on October 20. The show features a talented ensemble cast, including Chen Hanwei, Xiang Yun, Chantalle Ng, Jeremy Chan, Desmond Ng, and Priscelia Chan.

In *The Gift of Time*, Xie portrays a wealthy man paired with Chen’s character, who comes from a modest background. Circumstances lead them to unexpectedly bond after both are diagnosed with cancer, prompting them to help other terminal patients fulfill their last wishes.

Xie is drawn to the show’s themes. “The storyline resonates with my concerns about aging, illness, and death—issues everyone must confront,” he shared during a press conference. “Wealth and success mean little in the face of mortality, forcing us to reevaluate our priorities.”

His personal connection to the topic runs deep, having experienced several cancer battles in his family, including the loss of his father to pancreatic cancer. “My best friend is also in a critical fight against cancer, which makes this subject very personal for me.” He has even volunteered with cancer patients, adding to his depth of understanding.

To prepare for his role, Xie focused on his lived experiences, stating that “understanding the physical and emotional toll that illness takes is crucial. It’s challenging to depict unless you create a documentary.”

The drama explores how various cancer treatments can impact individuals differently. While Xie’s character avoids hair loss, he chose to shave his head as a gesture of solidarity. “My appearance isn’t the priority,” he remarked.

He emphasized self-acceptance, stating, “I embrace my age and connect with my experiences, having evolved from nothing to navigating the digital and AI ages.”

Reflecting on his return to the screen after such a long time, he found it easier due to advancements in technology. “The technical aspects have improved drastically. Now, I can focus simply on acting,” he said.

He noted that technology has changed lifestyles significantly, leading to a disconnect in understanding human emotions. “It’s essential to take time for oneself amidst the digital noise,” he mused, advocating for genuine social interactions.

Although he hasn’t confirmed any future projects, he remains open to opportunities. “I strive for satisfaction in everything I do, embracing challenges as they come,” he stated. “Each experience allows me to grow.”

*The Gift of Time* will be available for streaming on mewatch starting October 20, with its premiere on Channel 8 on October 23 at 9 PM on weekdays.
