Devendra Fadnavis on Nayak’s Influence and Challenges: A Message to Anil Kapoor
Devendra Fadnavis shares insights from Nayak during FICCI Frames 25th edition
A conversation with Akshay Kumar highlights the film’s impact on political leadership.
The 25th edition of FICCI Frames, a prominent media and entertainment summit, commenced in Mumbai, featuring an engaging dialogue between Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The discussion explored how cinema shapes the essence of leadership, with Fadnavis reflecting on how the 2001 film *Nayak*, starring Anil Kapoor, had a profound impact on his political journey.
Fadnavis discusses the influence of *Nayak*
When Akshay posed a question about the films that have inspired his political leadership, Fadnavis responded with a grin, “While films aren’t the sole factor in shaping leaders, they certainly touch on our emotions and empathy.” He remarked that countless films have left a mark on him, singling out *Nayak* as particularly significant. “It motivated me, but it also brought challenges,” he admitted.
In *Nayak*, Anil Kapoor portrays a journalist who becomes Chief Minister for a day, managing to overhaul the political system within just 24 hours. Fadnavis humorously remarked on the unrealistic expectations set by the film: “People often say to me, ‘Just be like Nayak! See what he accomplished in one day!’”
In a light-hearted anecdote, Fadnavis recounted telling Anil Kapoor, “Why did you make *Nayak*, bhai? Now people view us as nalayak (incompetent) compared to your heroics!”
Despite the lofty standards the film introduced, Fadnavis recognized its role in redefining leadership. He elaborated on how films reconnect leaders with their emotional core, stating, “Working in politics can lead to emotional dullness. Films reignite that sense of humanity. After a movie, I feel like myself again.”
About *Nayak*
Released in 2001 and directed by S. Shankar, *Nayak* has garnered cult status for its bold narrative and social critique. The plot follows Shivaji Rao, a TV journalist who accepts a challenge from the Chief Minister, taking over for a day. His decisive actions against corruption and injustice within that period leave a lasting impression. The film grossed approximately ₹20.56 crore at the box office.
