Given its $50 million production budget and additional promotional costs, the opening weekend figures are disappointing. The film ranked behind *Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl,* which earned $33 million, and *One Battle After Another,* starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which brought in $10.3 million in its second weekend.

*The Smashing Machine* portrays Johnson as MMA fighter Mark Kerr and draws inspiration from a 2002 documentary of the same name. The film also delves into Kerr’s relationship with his girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt, and is directed by Benny Safdie.
