Rajat Bedi Reflects on Bollywood’s Ruthlessness and Personal Loss
Rajat Bedi sheds light on his life and challenges in the Bollywood industry
Actor Rajat Bedi recently made waves with his return in Aryan Khan’s series Ba***ds of Bollywood. In an honest discussion with Siddharth Kannan, he opened up about his early life and the harsh realities he faced after the passing of his father, Narendra Bedi, when he was just nine years old.
Rajat Bedi: Bollywood’s Unforgiving Nature
Rajat recalled his grandfather, the esteemed Urdu writer and director Rajinder Singh Bedi, who collaborated with cinematic legends. His father, who began as an assistant to Raj Kapoor, directed several hit films.
Reflecting on his father’s death, Rajat expressed, “At nine, I lost my father. He was only 45. The industry seemed to forget us entirely, except for director Prakash Mehra, who was always there for us. For nearly a year post his demise, Prakash-ji offered support, telling my mother not to worry. It was a deeply unforgiving industry.”
He further stated, “After that, we distanced ourselves from the film world until I sought work. A pivotal moment came when my mother encouraged me to assist Ramesh Sippy. By 18, I had joined him, and soon, worked alongside Shah Rukh Khan on Zamaana Deewana.” Rajat fondly remembered SRK calling him “Tiger” during their two-and-a-half-year collaboration.
About Rajat Bedi’s Career
Rajat’s acting journey began with the 1998 film 2001: Do Hazaar Ek. He appeared in various successful films like International Khiladi, Koi… Mil Gaya, and Partner. After stepping back from Bollywood, he did projects in the Kannada and Telugu film industries.
In 2025, Rajat made a comeback in the digital realm through Ba***ds of Bollywood, a satirical portrayal of Hindi cinema that has received acclaim for its humor and direction. It showcases talent such as Manoj Pahwa and Bobby Deol and is currently streaming on Netflix.
