Alisha Chinai Shares Her Experience After Speaking Out Against Anu Malik
Alisha discusses her past sexual harassment case and the resulting isolation from the music industry.
Singer Alisha Chinai has recently opened up about her experiences following her 1996 sexual harassment allegations against music composer Anu Malik. Following her decision to pursue legal action, she faced significant isolation within the industry, and job opportunities dwindled. During a conversation with Zoom, Alisha revealed that she was initially hesitant to take action but was encouraged to speak out by her former husband and manager, Rajesh.
Encouraged by her husband, Alisha Chinai shared her experience and later supported other women during the #MeToo movement.
Disappointment and Isolation
In her interview, Alisha expressed her frustration, saying, “I believe they dismissed it outright. It was, unfortunately, a man’s domain at the time.” She credited her former husband for providing crucial support throughout her career, particularly during the difficult period following her allegations.
During this challenging time, Alisha noted that she had several projects with Anu Malik, but once her allegations were made public, her work opportunities significantly declined. She remarked, “A lot of my work just stopped. But I told myself, forget it; it didn’t bother me that they isolated me.”
Despite the challenges of the past, Alisha and Anu later collaborated again in 2003 for the film *Ishq Vishk* and served as judges on *Indian Idol*. She explained that their reconciliation was initiated after Anu offered a personal apology for crossing professional boundaries.
Years later, during the #MeToo movement, many women came forth with similar complaints against Anu Malik. Initially hesitant to engage, Alisha eventually lent her support to their claims.
Alisha Chinai is a celebrated pop and Bollywood singer, well-known for her contribution to the Indipop movement in the 1990s, particularly thanks to her hit song *Made in India* released in 1995. Over the years, she has collaborated with renowned composers like Anu Malik, Bappi Lahiri, and Rajesh Roshan, producing numerous memorable tracks for both pop and Bollywood projects.
