Zubeen Garg’s death shocked fans across the nation last Friday. The beloved singer tragically lost his life in a scuba diving accident in Singapore, just a day before his scheduled performance at the Northeast India Festival. Amid much scrutiny, Shyamkanu Mahanta, the festival’s organizer, took to Facebook to defend his actions.

Shyamkanu’s Defense
In his video statement, Shyamkanu claimed that he is being unfairly targeted for publicity. He expressed his distress, revealing that he learned of Zubeen Garg’s death at 3:30 PM on September 19. He emphasized that inviting Zubeen was not a mistake, as he is the festival’s brand ambassador and it was part of his duty. Shyamkanu noted that Zubeen was already in Singapore at the luxurious Pan Pacific Hotel, prepared to give a tribute to Bhupen Hazarika during the event. He expressed his shock regarding the untimely news of the singer’s passing.
Investigation Developments
In response to the situation, Assam’s Special Investigating Team (SIT) conducted raids at the homes of Shyamkanu Mahanta and his manager, Siddhartha Sharma. Reports indicated that only a couple of helpers were present at the properties during these investigations. Meanwhile, the Assam government has formed a 10-member SIT, headed by Special DGP M P Gupta, to probe the circumstances surrounding Zubeen’s death in Singapore.
Assam’s Chief Minister tweeted updates on the situation, stating:

👉 If necessary, we will escalate this to the CBI for further investigation.
