Ranbir Kapoor Once Refused Sonakshi Sinha for Besharam, Claims Director

Filmmaker Abhinav Kashyap remarks on Ranbir Kapoor’s casting choices
Notably, Bollywood director Abhinav Kashyap stirred interest in the media with his comments about the casting process for *Besharam*. In an interview, he mentioned that Ranbir Kapoor expressed a desire to cast Katrina Kaif as the female lead instead of Sonakshi Sinha.
Ranbir Kapoor’s Stance on Casting
Abhinav shared that although Ranbir favored Katrina for *Besharam*, he decided against this choice. “Ranbir suggested, ‘She wants to do the film, so consider her.’ But I believed she wasn’t suitable for the role. I needed a character who felt more authentic to the Punjabi background,” he elaborated.
He further noted that Katrina had to polish her Hindi accent, which he felt would be a challenge. “Most of her films required clarifications that she was either an NRI or from abroad due to her Hindi speaking capabilities,” Abhinav added.
Insights on Pallavi Sharda’s Audition
Kashyap expressed concerns about how the industry reacted to newcomers. He mentioned that Pallavi Sharda auditioned for a significant role and was favored by not just the team but also Ranbir’s family. “Sadly, the industry often struggles to accept new talent thriving over seasoned actors,” he remarked.
Despite initial interest in Sonakshi, Kashyap said, “Ranbir was uncomfortable with her. The reason behind his discomfort is something only he can explain.”
About *Besharam*
*Besharam*, released in 2013, was Abhinav’s last project as a director, featuring Ranbir Kapoor alongside Pallavi Sharda. The plot revolves around Babli, a cunning car mechanic, who also steals cars to help an orphanage where he was raised. His life takes a turn when he falls in love with Tara, portrayed by Pallavi, while facing off against various antagonists.
Despite its star cast and promotional push, the film didn’t resonate well with critics and audiences alike. It was criticized for its lackluster script and overuse of slapstick humor, intertwining with its commercial failures.
As we look back at the film’s impact, do you think casting choices significantly influence a movie’s success?
