Prosenjit Chatterjee on Devi Chowdhurani: A Rare Cinematic Gem
Prosenjit Chatterjee Discusses His Role in Devi Chowdhurani
Prosenjit Chatterjee is a prominent figure in the film industry, continuously pushing his artistic boundaries. As he prepares for the release of Devi Chowdhurani, directed by Subhrajit Mitra, the actor eagerly anticipates audience reactions. This historical drama is adapted from the works of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, with Chatterjee portraying the brave saint, Bhavani Pathak.
With the film debuting this Friday, Chatterjee shared insights about his experience. He emphasized the uniqueness of this project and the significance of releasing it during the vibrant Durga Pujo festival. His excitement surrounding this historical narrative is palpable.

Why These Stories are Timeless
Chatterjee expressed his joy about portraying Bhavani Pathak, viewing it as a unique opportunity. “Characters like Bhavani don’t come by often,” he stated. This adaptation from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s literature has historic roots, focusing on a period during the British Raj.
He elaborated on the depth of his character, mentioning Bhavani’s multifaceted nature as both a saint and a fighter. The role showcased numerous intriguing aspects, including Bhavani’s martial arts skills, which he used to teach villagers to protect themselves.
The movie features Srabanti Chatterjee in the leading role alongside other talented actors, set against the backdrop of 1770 Bengal. It narrates the story of a village girl transforming into a revolutionary leader under Bhavani’s mentorship, evocative of a Robin Hood figure.
“While this film incorporates commercial elements, it remains authentically Bengali,” Prosenjit clarified.
Working with Srabanti Chatterjee
Chatterjee shared insights into his collaboration with Srabanti. Their on-screen dynamics reflect their off-screen bond, creating an authentic mentor-student relationship. He noted her growth as an actress since their first film together.

He emphasized how natural their mentor-student connection feels, as she views him as a genuine guide. This rapport significantly enhances their performances, allowing the audience to connect deeply with their characters.
When discussing the significance of a film releasing during Pujo, Prosenjit noted it is a highly celebrated time in Bengal, creating a special viewing atmosphere. This surge in attendance for Bengali films is markedly evident during this festive season.
Why Bengali Films are Essential During Pujo
For Chatterjee, Durga Puja is filled with cultural significance, driving audiences towards local cinema during this time. With well-established routines during this festival, families plan outings to watch films, making it a crucial time for Bengali productions.
“It’s more than just a movie release; it’s an emotional event for Bengalis,” he concluded, emphasizing the festival’s importance for community and celebration.
Produced by ADited Motion Pictures and LOK Arts Collective, Devi Chowdhurani will be available in theaters starting September 26. Are you excited to see this unique historical drama?
