Thomas Pigott, a State Department spokesperson, expressed the rationale behind the policy: “We will not allow the Iranian regime to let its clerical elites go shopping in New York while the Iranian people suffer from poverty, crumbling infrastructure, and severe water and electricity shortages.”

## Specifics of the Shopping Ban

The directive prohibits Iranian officials from entering well-known stores such as Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale Club. A notice published on Tuesday in the Federal Register outlines that officials must obtain permission from the State Department for any “luxury goods” purchases.

The list of items requiring prior approval includes watches, electronic gadgets, and fountain pens valued over $1,000, along with vehicles priced above $60,000. These measures reflect the stringent nature of U.S. sanctions against Iran.

The Iranian economy has suffered significantly due to U.S. sanctions, which have hampered the country’s ability to import various products and restricted its oil exports.
